Activities and Adventurous Training Overview

Adventurous training and camps away during school breaks are both a major part of cadet life, and members of the contingent are encouraged to partake in the numerous activities offered to the CCF.

The Armed Forces provide the cadet force with a qualified supervisory team of military personnel known as the Cadet Training Teams (CTT). There are several CTTs around the country and Bournemouth School CCF is affiliated to 12 CTT. The participation of the CTT ensures a higher level of safety both for the cadets and for the officers, whilst always helping to keep people cheerful with their good and sometimes peculiar sense of humour.

Profiled below are just a flavour of some of the activities offered to cadets during their time with the CCF:

Adventurous training activities go on all year round and in many different parts of the UK.  Each February a camp is organised, normally on Dartmoor, when cadets take part in a wide range of activities from hiking, climbing and abseiling through to dry slope skiing and go-carting.

Throughout the rest of the year, adventurous "Field Days" are organised on a regular basis, normally once a term.  The last camp of the year is in the October half term holiday, when a group of cadets go to the Isle of Arran.  Adventurous training offers cadets a great chance to get to know one another and the officers on a far more personal level, which is both confidence building and motivating.

In May, the contingent enters two teams in the infamous "Ten Tors" challenge hike across Dartmoor.  The junior team route is 35 miles and the senior team tackles a grueling 45 miles in two days across some of the most difficult and punishing terrain in Britain. Click here for more info..

During the summer break, three camps usually take place, loosely based around the three sections, with Army Camp being the high point of the year. All camps are a week long and are fully supported by the Armed Forces.

The summer weather allows cadets to gain further proficiency in activities such as canoeing, body boarding, windsurfing, sailing, orienteering and many others.

Finally, the remaining major aspect of CCF life is shooting and marksmanship. All cadets are trained on the Cadet GP assault rifle. They have to pass a safety test supervised by a member of the Armed Forces before they are allowed to handle any loaded firearms.
