Bournemouth School CCF Army Section

The Army section, unlike the other sections, is split into two units;

  • Recce which concentrates on military tactics;
  • Signals which concentrates on radios and communications systems.

Recce cadets learn battle tactics and combat strategy whilst Signals learn how to set a comms network for the Recce to work with.

Signals cadets are taught how to use military radios such as the PRC 349, PRC 351 and the PRC320, they also learn how to erect 37"masts and communication lines with field telephones.  The Signals unit gets involved in a National Network competition once a year where units have to contact as many other units around the country using the PRC320 radios.

The highlights of training are field exercises held roughly once a term. These are 24-hour sessions when cadets put their skills to the test in a simulated tactical environment.

Every year a camp is organised in July on an Army base where cadets learn new skills and take part in adventurous training. A camp to Germany is also organised periodically. For example, a group of 20 cadets went to Krefeld and stayed on a Royal Signals base for 10 days in August 1997.

Army cadets may also attend specialist courses organised by the Cadet Training Team; the team is a full-time group of Army regulars who support local cadet contingents. Courses opportunities include:

  • physical training cadet instructor

  • advanced signals

  • advanced infantry

  • leadership
